In August 2025, the UN estimated that there were 476 million Indigenous People in the world, representing some 5,000 cultures and most of the 7,000 languages spoken on Earth. While official statistics have improved the lives of people worldwide by providing necessary and timely information on their lives, Indigenous Peoples have frequently been excluded, rendering them statistically invisible in their own countries. Although conditions vary, Indigenous Peoples tend to be poorer and are often minorities in their own countries. Statistical research has been done, although not nearly enough. This webinar will present recent developments in Indigenous
Statistics and the work of the new Special Interest Group (SIG) on Indigenous Statistics established by the ISI in February 2026.
