About SERJ and its editorial system
SERJ was established in 2002 by IASE to advance research-based knowledge that can help to improve the teaching, learning, and understanding of statistics and probability at all educational levels and in both formal and informal contexts. SERJ usually publishes three issues per year, including regular issues and a special issue edition of changing theme. The scope of submitted manuscripts represents the growing interest in research and new knowledge that can inform practice in statistics education (broadly viewed, including data science and related domains) at all levels and contexts of learning and practice.
The editorial system that operates SERJ includes an Editor and a Special Edition Editor, an Assistant Editor - Manuscripts (in charge of copy-editing of accepted manuscripts), and an Assistant Editor - Technology (in charge of final production of SERJ issues and managing the SERJ Online Journal System (OJS) website). These editorial role holders, who all serve for three years, are supported by an Editorial Board of about 12 Associate Editors from diverse countries who manage key portions of the reviewing process. SERJ is a voluntary organisation, and it operates on the basis of voluntary work by all the editorial role holders and editorial board members.
SERJ issues and materials are free and published through Open Journal System (OJS). The journal maintains autonomy regarding content and process, although some activities are coordinated with IASE and its parent organisation and SERJ co-publisher, the International Statistical Institute (ISI). All key Journal activities are conducted electronically/virtually. The IASE Executive Committee, the SERJ Advisory Board, and the SERJ Editors and Assistant Editors meet virtually as needed, and may meet, if feasible, during key international conferences such as ICOTS or the ISI’s World Statistics Congress.
Assistant Editor - Manuscripts: Expected qualifications and roles
The Assistant Editor - Manuscripts will work in conjunction with the SERJ Editors to manage the copyediting and production of three issues of SERJ per year. The Assistant Editor - Manuscript is responsible for the overall process of readying accepted manuscripts for publication (typically up to eight papers for regular issues, and up to 16 papers for special issues) .
Specifically, the Assistant Editor - Manuscript:
(A) copyedits the (English) language of accepted versions of manuscripts, and ensures that they are formatted in alignment with the SERJ template and follow APA 7 guidelines for style, literature citations, and references,
(B) corresponds with authors about copyediting changes, which includes helping authors to ensure that their manuscripts are written in acceptable standard English,
(C) Checks references for accuracy and ensures that each citation corresponds with a reference entry and vice versa,
(D) Communicates with the SERJ Editors regarding the status of manuscripts being processed, and transmits to them manuscripts whose copyediting is completed, for further processing by the Assistant Editor - Technology, who oversees final publication.
Overall, the Assistant Editor - Manuscripts is responsible for ensuring that published manuscripts and whole issues are of high quality in terms of their English language, style, and formatting. To best achieve this, the Assistant Editor should have strengths in language copyediting (in English) and APA formatting, possess knowledge of (academic) English matching a native speaker, and possess the communication skills necessary to interact with authors to finalize manuscripts for publication in a collegial and efficient manner. Some familiarity with research in the field of statistics education (broadly viewed, or related educational areas) is strongly preferred.
