In light of the fast-evolving data ecosystem, the planned special issue will explore various topics shaping the future of survey methodology and statistics, including:
- New forms of data collection (e.g. smartphones), passive data collection, and other innovations in data collection
- Mixed-mode data collections, adaptive and responsive survey designs
- Total survey error and methods for correcting non-sampling errors (e.g. coverage error, measurement error, non-response bias)
- Quality frameworks for non-survey data, uncertainty quantification for multi-source statistics, and variance estimation methods
- The future of survey sampling, including sampling hard-to-survey groups and ensuring equitable statistics
- Applications of machine learning and AI in survey research
- Data integration from multiple sources, including non-survey data (e.g. administrative data, census data, paradata, and big data) and non-probability survey data
- Statistical data integration
- Small area estimation, including integration with non-survey data
- Using non-survey data to augment survey data collection, estimation, and bias mitigation
- Non-probability sampling and methods to compensate for selection bias
- Privacy and confidentiality considerations
Researchers interested in contributing a manuscript are kindly requested to express their interest by sending a tentative title and short abstract to the guest editors, Maria Rosaria Ferrante and Natalie Shlomo (contact information below), by 4 July 2025.
The deadline for submitting full manuscripts to the special issue is 31 December 2025. Contributors are encouraged to present their work at the ITACOSM2025-IASS Satellite Conference preceding the 2025 World Statistics Congress, held from 1-4 July 2025 in Bologna, Italy. Further details about the conference are available at the event's website.
The call for abstracts for the conference will open in December 2024, with submissions for contributed papers accepted from 1 February 2025 to 31 March 2025. Researchers are encouraged to submit an abstract to the ITACOSM2025-IASS Satellite Conference when preparing to submit their manuscript to the special issue.
All manuscripts will undergo the standard rigorous peer-review process of Survey Methodology. The journal typically publishes innovative theoretical or applied research papers and occasional review papers that offer new insights into statistical methods relevant to National Statistical Offices and other statistical organisations. For further details about the journal, please visit Survey Methodology.
Manuscripts should be submitted through the submission portal. Please indicate in your cover letter that the submission is for the special issue.
