Short Course Announcement: Exploring Bayes Spaces in Functional Data Analysis

26 April 2024
Exploring Bayes Spaces in Functional Data Analysis

On 14 May 2024, a compelling short course from ERS-IASC, led by Jitka Machalova and Karel Hron from Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic, alongside Alessandra Menafoglio from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, will be conducted both in-person at the "Dipartimento di Studi per l'Economia e l'Impresa" of the Università del Piemonte Orientale and streamed online.

The course will focus on the analysis of distributional data, such as probability density functions or histogram data, which has recently garnered significant attention in various applications. These data types are often observed independently or as outcomes of aggregating large data streams. The session will introduce participants to the analysis of distributional data using a Functional Data Analysis (FDA) approach grounded in the perspective of Bayes spaces.

Bayes spaces are mathematical constructs where points represent densities or measures, offering a generalized framework for FDA akin to the Aitchison simplex for multivariate compositional data. The course will provide an overview of Bayes spaces theory in both univariate and multivariate contexts. Participants will gain practical insights into FDA methods through real case studies.

This live-streamed short course presents a valuable opportunity to delve into FDA of univariate and multivariate density functions from the vantage point of Bayes spaces methodology.
