Congratulations to Derek Tucker and Drew Yarger from Sandia National Laboratories. Their paper, "Elastic functional changepoint detection of climate impacts from localized sources," has been awarded the 2024 TIES Best Paper Award.

The paper introduces a novel and computationally efficient elastic functional changepoint detection approach, based on the amplitude phase decomposition of functional variability. Grounded in functional data analysis, this method differs substantially from traditional changepoint detection techniques. Its broad environmental applications are demonstrated through an analysis of stratospheric temperature, where the approach successfully identified changes in the tropics following the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. This work represents a significant contribution to the field of environmetrics.

On behalf of the International Statistical Institute, we extend our warmest congratulations to Derek Tucker and Drew Yarger for this achievement and for advancing the application of statistical methods to environmental science.
