Announcement of Results of 2025 Young Statisticians Prize

19 August 2025
IAOS BANNER

The International Association for Official Statistics is pleased to announce the results of the 2025 IAOS Young Statisticians Prize. A total of 24 submissions were received, from 44 authors / co-authors, and 19 different countries. Through a two-stage process, an international panel assessed the papers for their scientific/strategic merit, originality, applicability in statistical offices and quality of exposition.

The winner will present their paper at a mutually agreed international conference. Winning papers are also eligible to be published in a future issue of the SJIAOS.

The IAOS would like to congratulate the winners and thank all entrants. We would also like to thank the International Judging panel for their efforts.

The winning papers are:

1st place

Mr. Hanan Ather (Statistics Canada): LLM-Assisted Record Linkage: Framework for Record Linkage in Official Statistics

2nd place

Mr. Francesco Ortame and Mr. Francesco Isidori (Italian National Institute of Statistics): Statistical Frameworks for Reliable Machine Learning Predictions and Inference

3rd place

Mr. Maynard Anthony T. Acosta and Ms. Joermine Elaine P. Robredo and Ms. Naha Marie T. Bañoc (Philippine Statistics Authority): Real-time Monitoring of Household Final Consumption Expenditure of Pinoys Using Google Trends

The special commendation for a paper from a developing nation is awarded to:

Mr. Achmad Fauzi Bagus Firmansyah (Statistics Indonesia): Modernizing Harvested Paddy Areas Estimation through Satellite Imagery Time Series and Machine Learning

While a special commendation was made to the Indonesian entry, it should be noted that the 3rd place winner was also from a developing country. It should also be noted that the Indonesian paper was also placed 4th equal under the ‘normal’ judging criteria. The success of both the Philippine and Indonesian papers is a very good indication of  the quality of these papers.

It is Canada’s fifth time at winning the IAOS YSP Prize, and Italy’s first medal. The Philippines and Indonesia add to their medal haul, with the Philippines moving up 6 places on the Medals Table.

Also on behalf of The International Statistical Institute, congratulations to all winners of the 2025 Young Statisticians Prize.
