Call for Nominations: Abdel El-Shaarawi Early Investigator Award 2025 Now Open!

The International Environmetrics Society (TIES) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the prestigious Abdel El-Shaarawi Early Investigator (AEEI) Award 2025. This award celebrates early-career researchers who have made exceptional contributions to the development of statistical and quantitative methods in environmental sciences.

About the Award

Established to honor excellence, the AEEI Award recognizes outstanding achievements in environmental statistics, interdisciplinary research, and contributions to the Environmetrics community.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must:

  • Be members of TIES for 2024 and 2025.
  • Have completed their PhD within 12 years of the nomination deadline (14 February 2025).

Award Benefits

The recipient will receive:

  • A certificate recognizing their achievement.
  • Free registration for the World Statistics Congress (WSC) or a TIES conference.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be assessed on:

  • Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Research (30%): Demonstrated by high-quality, impactful publications in statistical literature.
  • Interdisciplinary Work (30%): Proven success in addressing environmental challenges through interdisciplinary research.
  • Community Contributions (20%): Involvement in Environmetrics community activities such as courses, conferences, and professional development.
  • Support for TIES (20%): Active participation in TIES events, committees, and initiatives.

Submission Process

Nominations must be submitted to the President of TIES by 14 February 2025. Submissions should include documentation supporting the nominee’s contributions based on the criteria outlined.

The AEEI Award has a history of honoring groundbreaking researchers:

  • 2024: Ephraim Hanks, The Pennsylvania State University, USA
    “For outstanding contributions to environmental statistics, especially in the field of ecology; for key methodological developments in spatial and spatio-temporal statistics; for strong interdisciplinary work in modeling animal movement; and for extensive support to the field of environmental statistics.”
  • 2023: Abhirup Datta, Johns Hopkins University, USA
    “For key contributions to theoretical, methodological, and applied statistics and machine learning approaches for spatial and temporal data analysis; for applications in environmental sciences and public health; for prolific open-access software development; for exemplary mentoring; and for synergistic activities within TIES and the broader community.”
