It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of ISI elected member Professor C.R. Rao on 22 August 2023. Professor Rao was the recipient of the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, which was presented to his family at the ISI World Statistics Congress in Ottawa in July.
He held the position of Professor Emeritus of Statistics at Penn State University's Eberly College of Science. Professor Rao received numerous awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his contributions. In 2002, he was honoured with the US National Medal of Science. The American Statistical Association lauds him as a "living legend" whose influence extends beyond statistics, shaping fields like economics, genetics, anthropology, and more. His legacy will continue to influence and inspire statisticians, researchers, and academics for years to come. The ISI extends its sincere condolences to the family of Professor Rao.
