The International Statistical Institute and Capacity Development Committee are pleased to announce the creation of a new position: Coordinator, ISI Academy for Statistical Capacity Development. This role represents an important opportunity to contribute to the implementation of the long-term strategy to strengthen statistical capacity globally through the ISI Academy.
Over recent years, members of the International Statistical Institute have undertaken significant work in formulating the capacity development strategy and in generating initial project ideas under the ISI Academy framework. As Matthew Shearing, Co-chair of the Capacity Development Committee, states:
“The Committee is very grateful for all of you who have put in the initial work in the last couple of years on the ISI strategy on capacity development and in developing project ideas to be supported by a new ISI Academy concept.”
Following discussions at the most recent World Statistics Congress, the ISI Executive Committee has formally endorsed the Academy’s initial strategic framework. This strategy prioritises:
- Leveraging ISI’s unique position and global networks;
- Promoting collaboration across disciplines and sectors, both within and beyond the statistical community;
- Focusing on initiatives that offer long-term strategic value and are positioned to attract substantial donor support.
As Matthew Shearing explains:
“[The newly hired Coordinator] will work closely with the Executive Committee and the ISI Capacity Development Committee to support the development of project ideas and to identify funding opportunities and other resources to advance those initiatives.”
Further developments include ongoing discussions with potential host countries/regions or cities for future international conferences dedicated to the ISI Academy’s objectives, as well as a proposal to rename the Capacity Building Committee to the Capacity Development Committee, aligning with current terminology in the field.
The Coordinator, ISI Academy for Statistical Capacity Development will play a vital role in facilitating the next phase of this ambitious endeavour.
