Following its successful debut, the International Statistical Institute is proud to announce the official release of the second edition of vISIon, our flagship magazine for the global statistical community. This latest issue was officially unveiled during the 5th ISI Regional Statistics Conference in Malta (3-5 June 2026).
Moving Beyond the Basics: Making the Invisible Visible
Under the continued leadership of Editor-in-Chief Manuele Leonelli, this second edition of vISIon explores a powerful central theme: how statistics helps make hidden realities visible. Published twice a year, vISIon bridges the gap between deep technical rigor and accessible, engaging storytelling. The contributions in this issue demonstrate how data can support global accountability, public understanding, and better decision-making across a wide range of critical fields:
- Visibility & Accountability: Features include Adriana Bora’s innovative work on utilizing explainable AI (XAI) against modern slavery in supply chains, and Jonathan Auerbach’s examination of how race and ethnicity classifications shape official statistics and public policy.
- Environmental & Climate Vulnerability: Suryo Adi Rakhmawan and I Nyoman Setiawan reveal how integrated geospatial and environmental data can expose hidden risks to coastal livelihoods in Indonesia, while Francisca Ubilla highlights real-world drought analysis using the CR2 Climate Explorer.
- Civic Responsibility & Technology: From discussions on community-engaged statistics by Claire Kelling to an insightful interview on public service with Tony Labillois, this issue explores the intersection of data science, human rights archives, and the International Statistical Literacy Project (ISLP).
Together, these articles demonstrate that statistical practice is not just technical work, but a vital civic, communicative, and technological responsibility that contributes to a fairer, more informed society.
