in memoriam

Born in December 1940, he was elected an ISI member in 1985.

Professor Pierre Cazes was a pillar of the French Statistical Society (SFdS), keen to promote statistics in its various forms. He was an outstanding editor of the Revue de Statistique Appliquée from 1979 to 2006, until its merger with the Journal de la SFdS, which succeeded the Journal de la Société de Statistique de Paris. For two more years, he worked alongside Henri Caussinus as editor of this new journal. He was also president of the Société Francophone de Classification. As a reader, proofreader, or referee, his meticulousness was legendary, but it was always exercised in a benevolent spirit that helped the author to progress.

Known for his work on data analysis with Jean-Paul Benzécri, he had an exceptional statistical culture that went far beyond this. As a professor at Paris-Dauphine University and a member of the Centre de Recherche en Mathématiques de la Décision (CEREMADE), he trained hundreds of students there and at the Institut de Statistique de Sorbonne Université (ISUP). He also supervised many Ph.D. students. His availability and kindness were immense. He had the modesty and simplicity of the greatest.

His colleagues will greatly miss Pierre Cazes.
