The International Statistical Institute is proud to announce that Professor Víctor Manuel Guerrero Guzmán has been awarded the 2025 Mahalanobis International Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the advancement of statistics in developing countries, particularly in Latin America.
Professor Guerrero, Emeritus Professor of Statistics at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), has demonstrated exceptional academic leadership throughout his distinguished career. With a PhD in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in major international journals, and several influential books in both English and Spanish. His research, especially in time series analysis and forecasting, has had a significant impact on the development of official statistics, improving techniques such as seasonal adjustment, temporal disaggregation, rapid estimation, and trend-cycle analysis.
His influence extends beyond academia. Professor Guerrero has held key leadership roles in statistical organisations, including President of the Mexican Statistical Association and the Inter-American Statistical Institute, and Director of the International Institute of Forecasters. He has also served in prominent government and institutional roles, such as Director of Information Systems at the Ministry of Public Education and Head of Research at Mexico’s Central Bank.
A dedicated mentor and educator, Professor Guerrero has supervised numerous theses and has taught throughout Latin America and Europe. He is widely respected not only for his scholarly excellence, demonstrated by more than 1,600 citations and a strong academic impact, but also for his humility, mentorship, and deep commitment to advancing statistical capacity in developing regions.
As noted by Professor Pilar Poncela of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Professor Guerrero is “the” statistician in Mexico, widely respected across generations of researchers and practitioners. His legacy reflects scientific excellence, institutional leadership and a strong commitment to using statistics for public good.
The Mahalanobis Award recognises not only Professor Guerrero’s lifetime achievements but also the profound and lasting impact of his work on the statistical community in Mexico, Latin America, and other developing countries.
