The 2025 TIES Abdel El-Shaarawi Early Investigator (AEEI) Award has been awarded to Won Chang, from Seoul National University (Korea). Congratulations!
The award will be presented to Won during an invited presentation session at the WSC conference in The Hague in October this year.
Won Chang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at Seoul National University. He earned his PhD in Statistics from Pennsylvania State University in 2014, under the supervision of Dr Murali Haran and Dr Klaus Keller. After graduation, he worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Chicago for two years, mentored by Dr Michael Stein. From 2016 to 2024, he served as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor in the Division of Statistics and Data Science at the University of Cincinnati. He joined Seoul National University in September 2024 as an Associate Professor. His work has been recognised with honours such as being an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute and receiving the Career Development Award from the Korean International Statistical Society. His current research, funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, focuses on uncertainty quantification and spatial analysis using AI approaches, with a particular emphasis on applications in environmental sciences, including glaciology.
