Definitions

The International Statistical Institute (“ISI”) is established under Dutch Law and governed by its Statutes. The definitions are an integral part of the By-Laws, and follow the same amendment procedures as amendments to the By-Laws set out in the Statutes.

Association Statutes & By-LawsThe internal Statutes and By-Laws that are established by the Executive Committee of an Association. The ISI Statutes By-Laws prevail above Association Statutes and By-Laws
By-LawsThe additional rules and procedures made or amended by the Executive Committee after consultation with the Council to support the effective operation of the ISI.
Code of ConductThe guidelines which set out how Officers of the ISI should behave in their role as an Officer to the ISI.
Conflict of InterestWhere an officer of the ISI or any member of the ISI has a personal or financial interest in a topic under discussion by the Executive Committee, Council, operational or standing committee, special interest group, taskforce that they are a member of, or the General Assembly.
Conflict of Interest StatementStatement made by an officer of the ISI or member, where they have a personal or financial interest in a topic under discussion.
CouncilThe committee of appointed officers of the ISI, together with the ISI Executive Committee officers, ISI Past President, Association Presidents, ISI Director and Director General of Statistics Netherlands which provides advice to the Executive Committee on ISI policies and programmes.
DirectorThe head of the ISI Permanent Office, responsible to the ISI Executive Committee for the management of the Permanent Office and who works with the ISI Executive Committee to implement the strategic vision, priorities and policies of the ISI.
Elected MemberIndividuals who share the values and objectives of ISI and are established in their statistical careers are eligible to be considered for elected membership. Elected membership is recognition of professional standing in one or more of the following areas: statistical research, practice, education, administration of statistical service, or the promotion of the profession. All elected members are required to pay an annual individual membership fee and are eligible to be considered for any officer position in the ISI.
Event CommitteeA special committee appointed by the ISI Executive Committee for one-off events.
Ex-Officio MemberDesignated representative of an Organisational member. The ex-officio member has the same benefits as an ISI member except eligibility to stand for ISI officer positions.
Executive CommitteeThe committee of appointed officers of the ISI responsible for the management of the affairs and execution of the policies of the ISI, together with the ISI Director, in accordance with Dutch Law, the ISI Statutes and By-Laws and decisions made by the ISI General Assembly. The Executive Committee consists of the President, President-elect and four Vice-Presidents.
General AssemblyThe regular annual meeting of the Members of the ISI, which is the highest authority of the ISI, and among other things, receives and considers reports on the ISI’s activities and finances, appoints members of the Executive Committee and Council, establishes Associations and decides on changes to the Statutes.
Individual MemberA person who has joined the ISI in an individual capacity (regular or elected) or is an ex-officio member (representing an Organisational Member). All individual members have voting rights at the General Assembly.
ISIThe International Statistical Institute (hereafter referred to as the ISI). The international society registered under Dutch Law, with the objectives of promoting and supporting the understanding, advancement and good practice of Statistics, its profession and the statistical and data sciences worldwide.
ISI Association

An ISI Association is an informal section of the ISI, being the legal entity registered under Dutch law, and is established by the  ISI General Assembly to promote the mission and objectives of the ISI in particular areas of the statistical and data sciences. An Association shall have its own:

  • members
  • organisational bodies
  • membership fees
  • Association Statutes/li>
  • By-laws if desired
Management CommitteeCommittee that manages the affairs of a Special Interest Group or Outreach Committee.
MemberIndividual or organisation who shares the values and objectives of the ISI who has registered as a member and pays membership fees.
Membership Election CommitteeStanding Committee charged with the duty of examining all nominations for ISI elected membership.
MSLE ActAct on Management and Supervision of Legal Entities (“Wet Bestuur en Toezicht Rechtspersonen”), which entered into force in the Netherlands on 1 July 2021, where the ISI is registered. The MSLE act entered into force to ensure transparency in decision making for societies.
Multi-year Membership feesOption to Regular and Elected members of paying for multiple years of membership in advance.
Nominations CommitteeStanding Committee responsible for selecting a slate of candidates for the Officers of the ISI election.
Officer of the ISIAny appointed member of either the Executive Committee or the Council.
Operational CommitteeCommittee established to focus on the overall functioning of the ISI and its long-term concerns as an international body representing the statistical profession and community. The committees are listed on the ISI website.
Organisational MemberAny organisation (including but not limited to national, regional or international statistical organisations, central banks, national or regional statistical societies, educational and scientific institutions, private sector entities or non-profit organisations) who shares the values and objectives of the ISI.
Outreach CommitteeCommittee established to develop and implement  activities, networks and promote and represent the ISI and its Associations in different regions. The committees are listed on the ISI website.
PartnershipCollaboration between the ISI and other entities which share the objectives and values of the ISI. A partnership is not a membership. 
Past PresidentThe person who served as President, in the term prior to that of the current President.
Permanent OfficeThe team of employees who, together with the Director, support the operation of the ISI.
PresidentThe Officer of the ISI jointly responsible (together with the other Executive Committee members) for the execution of policies and decisions of the General Assembly and Executive Committee, and for chairing the General Assembly, Executive Committee, Council and who provides leadership for the ISI.
President-electThe person who has been appointed to be President in the term following the current President.
Regional Statistics ConferenceA conference of the ISI, held in different countries and regions, which brings together international colleagues, from various professional backgrounds and with different points of view, to discuss and debate statistical and data science issues. 
A Regional Statistics Conference is organised by the host country/region. The host country/region holds organisational and financial responsibility for this conference. The ISI supports the host country/region. The Chair of the Scientific Program Committee is an ISI member appointed by the ISI Officer, who will be President during the conference.
Regular MemberA member, who shares the values and objectives of the ISI and joins in an individual capacity. All regular members are required to pay an annual individual membership fee, and are eligible to be considered for any officer position in the ISI.
Special General AssemblyMeeting of the Members, other than an annual General Assembly, called for a specific purpose or purposes.
Special Interest GroupGroup which focusses on matters of statistical interest that may reach across areas of statistics and/or link statistics with other disciplines and/or professional interests and/or bodies and/or current developments. The groups are listed on the ISI website.
Standing CommitteePermanent formally constituted ISI committee with specified responsibilities operating indefinitely.
StatutesThe ISI Statutes state what rules and procedures apply to ISI and state why the ISI is set up, how it operates and who is responsible for what.
Vice-PresidentsThe persons appointed to the positions of the four vice-presidents on the Executive Committee.
Voting periodThe period commencing on the date the electronic voting starts (and including) and ending on (and including) the date the electronic voting closes.
World Statistics CongressThe biennial congress of the ISI, held in different countries and regions, which brings together international colleagues, from various professional backgrounds and with different points of view, to discuss and debate statistical and data science issues. 
The World Statistics Congress is organised by the ISI. The ISI holds organisational and financial responsibility for this congress.
