Pietro Gennari
ISI Academy Coordinator
Pietro Gennari was appointed as ISI Academy Coordinator in July 2025.
He has over 35 years of professional experience in the main areas of official statistics and in managing large statistical programmes, both at the national, regional and international levels. Pietro spent 15 years at Italian National Statistical Agencies, where he held progressively senior managerial roles, leading different technical departments. From 2003 to 2023, he worked in the statistical office of UN Organizations, first as Director of the Statistics Division at the UN Regional Commission for Asia-Pacific and then, since December 2008, as Director of the Statistics Division and Chief Statistician at FAO. In this role, he coordinated the FAO statistical system by leading the monitoring work and capacity development initiatives for the SDG indicators under FAO custodianship.
Throughout his career, Pietro gained extensive international experience in providing support to enhance the statistical capacity of developing countries, with direct in-depth knowledge of their statistical system and their needs for technical assistance. He has been successful in mobilising and managing extensive extrabudgetary resources to implement multi-donor programs, aimed, in particular, at strengthening food security and agricultural statistics, as well as monitoring SDG indicators.
Pietro has played a prominent role in the international statistical community, serving as Co-Chair of the Committee of Chief Statisticians of the UN system (2013–2017), Co-Chair of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (2013–2017), and Chair of the ISI Committee on Agricultural Statistics (2011–2017). He has represented UNESCAP and FAO at the UN Statistical Commission and other global forums and chaired several international expert groups.
As an experienced lecturer and trainer, he has organised and delivered courses, seminars, and master's programs for official statisticians around the world. Pietro currently teaches at the Master of Science, “La Sapienza” University of Rome, where he was appointed Professor of Statistical Methods and Applications in 2023. He published several papers in Italian and international scientific journals throughout his entire professional career. In July 2023, he was nominated Editor-in-Chief of the Statistics Journal of the International Association for Official Statistics (SJIAOS).
