About the instructor
Marcel de Toledo Vieira, born in 1976 and winner of the 2007 Cochran-Hansen Prize of the International Association of Survey Statisticians (IASS), is currently Associate Professor of Statistics, at the Department of Statistics of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in Brazil.
He has been a member of the IASS since 2007 (Council Member between 2011 and 2015) and was elected Member of the International Statistical Institute in 2013.
He took his PhD in Statistics under the supervision of Professor Chris Skinner on the Analysis of Complex Longitudinal Survey Data (University of Southampton, 2005), and has been teaching sampling design and survey methodology courses since 2006. He has designed several national and international surveys.
Marcel is currently a member of several committees, including the Brazilian Census 2020/2021 Advisory Committee of the Brazilian National Official Statistics Agency (IBGE), and the Survey Sampling Methodology Advisory Committee of the Brazilian National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (INEP). He was recently appointed by the OECD as the Sampling Referee for the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
He has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Survey Methodology Journal and the Journal of Official Statistics, is an Associate Researcher at the Centre for Mathematics Applied to Forecasting and Economic Decision (CEMAPRE) of the University of Lisbon, and has been an academic visitor or visiting professor in institutions in different countries, including the United Kingdom, Portugal, South Africa, and Mozambique.
