Goal: Given the recent unprecedented natural disasters and ongoing economic instability, the YS-ISI committee believes this is a timely opportunity to raise awareness among Young Statisticians (YS), specifically in Asia and the Pacific, about how data can improve decision-making and support scientific inquiry through modern techniques and methodologies.

About the instructor
Yan Gong is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She holds Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) working with Prof. Raphael Huser, and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics from Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). Before her current position, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Imperial College London (ICL). Dr. Gong's research interests include statistics of extremes and risk assessment, spatial statistics, and causal inference, with applications to financial, climatic, and human health data. She will join UNSW Sydney as a Lecturer in 2026.

Professor and head of Econometrics and Business Statistics, School of Business, Monash University Malaysia. Served as professor at School of Statistics, University of the Philippines Diliman, visiting professor at Karlstad University and visiting researcher at Asian Development Bank Institute. His research interest focused on computational statistics, nonparametric methods, high frequency and high dimensional time series, big data analytics and financial econometrics. He is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, also a member of the Econometric Society, East Asian Economic Association, and the Philippine Statistical Association.

Distinguished Professor of Statistics at QUT, ISI Vice-President
Professor Kerrie Mengersen is a globally recognised leader in statistical science. She is a Distinguished Professor at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), where she leads the QUT Centre for Data Science, and an Associate Member of the Department of Statistics at the University of Oxford. She currently serves as Vice-President of the International Statistical Institute.
She holds a PhD in Mathematical Statistics from the University of New England and has held academic and industry positions at leading institutions. Her research spans Bayesian methods, complex systems modelling, and applied statistics, with practical impact in fields such as environment, health, and industry.
Professor Mengersen has published over 350 journal articles, supervised more than 30 postgraduate students, and led more than 30 major research grants. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, and the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In 2024, she received the prestigious Ruby Payne-Scott Medal and Lecture from the Australian Academy of Science. She also led the team behind the Australian Cancer Atlas 2.0, a partnership between QUT and Cancer Council Queensland, which received two Oceania Geospatial Excellence Awards.
