Today, we speak with Konstantinos Makantasis, Bilal Kurban, and Roxanne Spiteri.  They are the speakers leading the upcoming short course, 'Neural networks and deep learning'. We sat down with them to discuss the core objectives of the course, the unique value it offers, and the specific skills participants will bring back to their organisations.

What is the main goal of your short course and what will participants be able to apply afterwards?
Konstantinos: The main goal of the course is to provide participants with a clear, working understanding of deep learning and how to implement it in practice. By the end of the day, participants will be able to design, train, and evaluate neural network models using modern deep learning frameworks. They will also gain hands-on experience applying deep learning to real problems, enabling them to begin integrating these techniques into their own projects.

Who is this course intended for and what background knowledge is expected?
Roxanne: The course is intended for students, researchers, and professionals who want to build practical competence in deep learning. It is particularly suitable for those working in data science, machine learning, or related fields.Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of programming (preferably in Python) and foundational knowledge of machine learning concepts such as supervised learning, model evaluation, and basic statistics.

What makes your course different compared to similar courses in this field?
Bilal: What sets this course apart is its balance between conceptual clarity and practical application within a compact, one-day format. Rather than focusing purely on theory or high-level abstractions, the course emphasises intuitive understanding alongside hands-on implementation. It also integrates multiple application domains giving participants a broader perspective on how different neural architectures are applied in practice.

What is one key takeaway participants will learn from your course?
Konstantinos:  One key takeaway is the ability to implement and adapt neural network models for different data modalities using a structured workflow. Participants will learn how to move from problem definition to model design, training, and evaluation. This end-to-end perspective equips them with a reusable approach they can apply to new problems.
